Christmas (Xmas) Traditions: Cards

Handwritten Christmas greetings and prints go back to the Middle Ages. The custom of sending printed Christmas cards began in Victorian England. John C. Horsley is believed to have designed and printed the first Christmas card in 1843 at the request of Sir Henry Cole. In the 1850s R. H. Pease of Albany, New York produced the first Christmas cards in the United States. Louis Prang, a printer from Roxbury, Massachusetts, later developed an improved process for color printing. With this improvement, in 1874 the Christmas card industry began in earnest. Today billions of dollars worth of religious and secular Christmas cards are sent to family and friends during the holiday season.
