Christmas (Xmas) Traditions: Gift Giving
Christmas gifts have a long and varied history. The giving of gifts was part of the ancient Roman midwinter festival. The Bible tells of the Three Wise Men or Magi bringing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to the infant Jesus shortly after his birth. Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children, was known for his generosity to the poor and was the main bearer of gifts in Europe. European immigrants also brought with them Christkindlein (little Christ Child), a heavenly messenger who brought Christmas gifts instead of Jesus. Christkindlein later became Kris Kringle, another name for Santa Claus.
