Christmas History

Christmas is a Christian holiday celebrated on December 25 by Christians around the world to mark the humble birth of Jesus Christ in a manger in Bethlehem.

Although the birth of Jesus is recorded in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew, it was almost 400 years before the Roman Catholic Church officially recognized the holiday. While the exact date of Jesus’ birth is not known, it is believed that the date of December 25 was chosen to compete with rival pagan celebrations in December.

Today Christians celebrate Xmas by attending midnight and vigil services on Christmas Eve. The churches are beautifully decorated and resound with stirring music and carols.

American Christmas celebrations include customs and traditions brought to our country by peoples from around the world.
