Christmas (Xmas) Traditions: Holly

Although holly was used in ancient pagan celebrations, it became an acceptable symbol of the Christmas holiday. One thought is that the use of holly as a Christian symbol came about because the prickly leaves resembled Jesus’ crown of thorns and the red berries resembled drops of blood. Early wreaths were often made from holly.
