Christmas (Xmas) Traditions: Poinsettias
Poinsettias, a plant native to Mexico and Central America, are the traditional Christmas flower. The plant was originally known in Mexico as Flor de Fuego, the Flower of Fire, and was a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem. Poinsettias are named after Joel Poinsett, a botanist who was the first ambassador to Mexico. First brought to the United States in 1828, millions of poinsettias decorate churches and homes each Christmas season.
