Christmas (Xmas) Traditions: Saint Nicholas

Saint Nicholas, the person on whom Santa Claus is based, was born in Asia Minor (now Turkey) during the 4th century. Saint Nicholas was a religious man and at a young age became Archbishop of Myra. Born of wealth parents, he used his fortune to help the poor. Most of the stories told about Saint Nicholas are based on legends. As a result of these legends Saint Nicholas became the patron saint not only of children but also of thieves, sailors, scholars, lawyers, travelers and of a number of countries. As the original giver of gifts in Europe, St.Nicholas was depicted in the clerical robes of a bishop and rode a white horse. December 6th, the traditional date of his death, is celebrated by the Roman Catholic Church as Saint Nicholas Day. On the eve of this day children put out their shoes and wake to find them filled with small toys and treats. Under different names St. Nicholas was brought to America by European immigrants. Saint Nicholas eventually became the Santa Claus we know today.
