Christmas (Xmas) Traditions: Santa Claus
Santa Claus as he is depicted today was first described as a plump jolly old elf dressed in fur in the 1822 poem “A Visit From Saint Nicholas” by Clement Clarke Moore. Thomas Nast, an illustrator for Harper’s Illustrated Weekly, later depicted Santa Claus in a red suit with fur trim, a wide belt and a pointed stocking cap. The art of Haddon Sundblom, in a series of ads for the Coca-Cola Company during the 1930s, transformed Santa Claus from the plump jolly old elf into a plump jolly old man. This is the smiling, bearded Santa Claus we see today.
