Christmas (Xmas) Traditions: Christmas Tree
The Christmas Tree is generally the most important symbol of Christmas in homes today. Historically evergreens were used in pre-Christian European celebrations because they remained green during the winter months. The custom of decorating the Christmas Tree originated in Germany. While several legends exist about the origin of the Christmas Tree, its use was first mentioned in an anonymous account in 1605.
One story credits Martin Luther, who began the Protestant reformation, with the first use of candles on the Christmas Tree. The Christmas Tree was brought to American by German immigrants. The tradition soon became widely used in American homes. Whether alive or artificial, decorating the Christmas Tree has become an important part of the holiday celebration.
