Easter Sunday Traditions: Easter Rabbit
The Easter Bunny originated with the pagan spring festival honoring the Anglo-Saxon goddess Eastre. A symbol of fertility, the rabbit was the symbol of Eastre. The bunny as a symbol of Easter seems to have come from German folklore. The tradition of the Easter Bunny was brought to America by German immigrants during the 1700s. The Easter Bunny gradually gained in popularity until he became the one who filled children’s Easter baskets with chocolate candy, jelly beans and colored eggs.
