Fathers' Day History

Father’s Day, which is celebrated on the third Sunday in June, is generally believed to have been the idea of Mrs. John Bruce Dodd of Spokane, Washington as a way to honor her father. Her father had raised six children following the early death of her mother. The first Father’s Day was celebrated in 1910.

It wasn’t until 1972 that Congress permanently established the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day.
