Halloween Trick or Treat

Part of the American Halloween tradition is for children to go “trick or treating”. Dressed in costumes children go knocking on doors in their neighborhood. The neighbors are expected to give them candy or other treats. This tradition goes back to the Druid practice of begging for material for the bonfires lighted to drive away the dead who roamed at the time of their autumn festivals. The trick part of the tradition is based on the belief that ghosts and witches were up to mischief at this time and any practical joke could be blamed on them. Today in many communities parades and celebrations have replaced the “trick or treat” tradition.
