Mothers' Day History

Mother’s Day, which is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, came about through the efforts of Miss Anna M. Jarvis of West Virginia. Following the death of her mother in 1905, Anna Jarvis arranged for her church to hold a Mother’s Day service in her mother’s memory. Carnations had been her mother’s favorite flower and everyone who attended the service was given one of these flowers.

Miss Jarvis then began a letter-writing campaign to have a special day declared to honor all mothers. Her efforts gradually resulted in a Mother’s Day being proclaimed in a number of states. On May 9, 1914 President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation which designated the second Sunday in May as a day to show love and honor for the mothers of the country. Similar proclamations are issued each year by the President.
