Valentines Day Traditions: Greeting Cards

The first Valentine cards were handmade, sentimental love notes sent by men to the ladies in their lives. In the 1850’s Esther Howland began marketing valentines made from paper lace adorned with lithographed flowers, bouquets, birds and other romantic designs. When valentines began to be lithographed and mass produced in the United States during the 1860’s, interest in the more expensive handmade valentines declined. Today Valentine’s Day is the second largest card sending holiday of the year. Valentine cards may be sentimental or funny. Either way, people enjoy sending and receiving them.
